1914年8月，类房当德国军队在法国北部取得进展时，类房四名10至15岁的男孩，吕西安、卢卡斯、路易吉和路德维希在撤离孤儿院时被留下。不久，与父母失散的小女孩露丝加入了他们的行列，他们决定使用千方百计也要到达中立国瑞士，于是一场毫无准备的冒险开始了。

In a time when it is against the law to marry outside your race, Henriette (Williams), and Gerard (Bellows), fall in love and face trials of the law of the land of the day. They plan on moving to France where Gerard is from, where they can marry without any restrictions. Until Henriette's sister falls sick and they are forced to stay in the states.
