1991年夏，春暖一场特大洪水使无数家园毁于一旦。周桂英和陈宝根正准备吃饭，春暖儿子阳阳却在厨房里发现了三个陌生的孩子：石风，甜甜和铁蛋。夫妻俩可怜这些孩子，商量后将他们留下，给桂英增加了不少负担。根宝心疼妻子，决定将孩子的下落通知乡干部，把孩子送回去。桂英得知石风和铁蛋的父母都在抗洪救灾中牺牲了，便十分关注这两个孩子，并为偏袒他们，打了阳阳。根宝赌气离家，奔忙在救灾一线，把奖金和补助费都寄回家。为救护孕妇过河，极度疲劳的根宝心脏病发作，被洪流冲走。桂英捧着点燃了长明灯的船，轻轻地放入河里。
