故事发生在民国年间的上海。因为小说名家古鹏（乔奇 饰）新作问世，国产高清与其秘书徐梦飞（周野芒 饰）在众人面前因著作权产生冲突，国产高清导致徐梦飞第二天被人杀害，新闻界一片哗然。大侦探霍桑（翟乃社 饰）介入此案侦破，他在现场勘查了所有物证，并对古鹏产生了怀疑。当他携带证据找古鹏父女对质时，一个叫苏淑琴（赵雪芹 饰）的女人来自首，承认自己是凶手，是因徐喜新厌旧而杀了他。验尸报告出乎所有人意外，死者竟不是徐梦飞。正在这时，苏淑琴离奇死亡，又给侦破工作蒙上光怪陆离的阴影。考虑再三，霍桑准备用引蛇出洞的方法擒获真凶。于是，《申报》刊登出古鹏住院的消息......
