台湾老兵刘燕生（凌峰 饰）到上海，日韩寻找自己失散几十年的妻子乔玉娥（卢燕 饰）和从没见过面的儿子。乔玉娥当年和刘燕生失散三年后，日韩和陆善民（徐才根 饰）组成家庭并生有两个女儿。刘燕生了解到乔玉娥和丈夫情感不好，就希望能带乔玉娥和他一起到台湾生活，并承诺拿出自己一生的积蓄，来补偿乔玉娥的丈夫和这个家庭的子女。但立刻引发这个家庭的剧烈震荡，激烈的争吵使几十年的亲人团聚变成了彼此的再次伤害，直到陆善民脑溢血生命垂危……乔玉娥无法抗拒分离的命运再次降临，只好在几十年前相同的上海码头，再次送走自己深爱的刘燕生……

回复 :本片是“安托万系列”的最后一部，特吕弗有选择地插放了安托万（让-皮埃尔·李奥 Jean-Pierre Léaud 饰）一路成长的点滴。安托万三十而立时，职业上，成功进入一家印刷厂，成为一名作家，出版了自传体小说；婚姻上，与克里斯汀（克劳迪·贾德 Claude Jade 饰 ）的缘分走到尽头，但两人离婚后亦是朋友，在两人办完离婚手续，共同回忆过去一幕幕的甜蜜往事时，仍会心生美滋滋。影片也以插叙的形式重现了安托万以往的生活。他与科莱特意外地重新相遇，科莱特此时已经成为一个律师。两人都又遇到了令他们怦然心动的人，而为了留住缘分，也都花费了一番很大的心思。
