美国麦迪逊城的一群大学生到一个偏远小镇旅行，国产他们去采访一位作家，国产他写过一本关于20年前小镇连环杀手的书。当学生们到达麦迪逊的小镇，找遍全镇却找不到作家。问镇上的居民，他们说已经好几年没见过作家了，他们还否认小说里的那位连环杀手戴蒙曾经存在过，并且那些凶案从未发生。原本为了采访的学生们竟想查明真相，当他们在小镇周围徘徊，挖掘线索寻找答案时，却发现那个传说中的连环杀手戴蒙比小说中的更让人震惊！
